Topic: Question about a big for a big guy.

I have a friend who is really big.....actually gigantic.....about 6'5" 300 pounds ish......
 
He is looking to get into riding mountain bikes....he has done it before, but I don't think he was as GIGANTIC as he is now.

So, here is the quandry:
 
looking for a used bike that will not fold under him the first time he hits a bump.
 
I have suggested looking for a used Kona Hoss, since that bike was made for Clydes........
 
Any other suggestions.......Maybe a Specialized Hardrock??

my 1st Real  Mountain bike was a Used Rock hopper.. The stock fork did break, but it had rubber elastomers that were 8 years old...

Hardrock is a tough frame.  It may be slim pickins trying to find the right size though.  I had one hell of a time trying to find used 21" bikes. 

You may want to check out mtbr.com and post up a question in the Clyde's forum.  They could probably help the decision process along.

I have a large Hardrock (?= 19"). It was a little smaller than I like and I'm 6'1". Specialized also made an XL and an XXL for most model years. If he found an XL he'd probably be alright but an XXL might work better.

From what I've read, a Hardrock is a ridiculously tough frame. Stock fork leaves something to be desired in the durability department though on most models.


Kona Hoss sounds like an excellent recommendation. Probably paying a bit of a premium but you have the knowledge that it was designed to work.

I started out on a xl rockhopper and I was very close to the height and weight you have listed. Bike did fine for me other that the rear rim and fork.

I weigh about 270 and my first bike was an Iron Horse Warrior 1.3 I got from Dicks.  It had a Rock Shox Dart 1 fork on it.  I never had problems with the fork.  The only thing I had problems with were the square taper cranks.  They came loose which means you can never get them to work again. 

Iron Horse is long gone, but basically, I think any bike would be able to hold up to him.  I would probably get a cheapo coil sprung fork since he won't have to worry about blowing seals or anything.

My 1st mountain bike was a rock hopper. he may have to change the fork and the wheels, but the frame is bullet proof..

My 1st bike was a Rockhopper also but many many moons ago with rigid forks..  but since this bike was purchased on 8/29/09 he still has 5 1/2 months to tear up the fork and the wheels since they are covered under warranty for 1yr.

I have a 1999 Kona Blast.....I am 6'5" 260 pounds....I am using Rock Shock Dart3..Rino Lyte rims which are awesome............I do 5 to 6 ft drops at santos other than slightly bending the rims which I retule them..I had no problems...Oh yeah I just break seats....lol
