Bought a new bike on EBay! Shipping problem/question.
« on: February 28, 2007, 07:31:33 PM »
I bought a customized '06 Rush 1000 on E-Bay. The seller listed the minimum price too high to make most people's watch list, so I ended up being the only bidder ;D It's got better components than the HT I was looking at ('07 Caffeine F1) and cost almost $500 less, though I will have to buy pedals.

I had asked him what shipping would be a few days ago- before I bid on it. He quoted me $70, professionally boxed and shipped. That seemed right in line with every other similar auction. However, when he sent me an Invoice it has $115 S&H listed. A $45 discrepancy is pretty annoying, and I sent him a message regarding this. Does anyone know what the typical shipping cost for a bike is, and have any suggestions on how to deal with this if he persists on the $115?

That sounds about right.  I just paid $70 for two sets of Spinergy Wheels. The cost is for the weight and size of box..... Total shipping weight for my boxes was 12lbs and 14lbs. Other parts where put in the wheel boxes for shipping.  So $115 sounds good. Also you can check the tracking number info, it will show you total shipping weight. Good luck....

I don't know - could e the weight or who is actually the shipper.  I FedEx'd for $50 each way to Idaho and back a couple of years ago.  FUel charges have made shipping cost more, so who knows anymore.  Call a couple places - FedEx, UPS, Roadway Package Systems and see what they all charge and you may be in the ball park.  Remember, they base their rates by measurement AND weight if it's over a certain poundage.

The weight rating gets more expensive when the weight goes over 70#s. This is also when USPS won't even accept the package. I shipped a pair of (truck) tires a couple years ago and they each weighed 72.5#s so I went through that mess. I'm not sure about the size ratings but I know I was pushing the limits at 38x38x15.... Bikes are definately "oversized" items.

He changed his shipping back to $70. He said that when he calculated the shipping this time it was $115 but he would stand by his earlier quote. Poor guy must be getting hosed on this bike :P

It doesn't matter if the seller paid $115 to ship it to you.  If the auction stated $70 then you should've have paid only $70 for it.  Have you send him payment?  If the auction still says $70 make sure you use paypal to pay him.  Do not buy anything without PAYPAL.  That gives you double protection.  First within Ebay where you can submit a problem and they will try to resolved it for you.  Second with PayPal where you can claim back your money if you didn't get what was stated on the auction.

If you have not paid him and the bike still with him, then you may jus thav eto fork out the $115 if you really want that bike.  make sure you leave him negative feedback for backpeddling on the auction and charging you more then originally stated.

He honored his previous quote of $70, then I payed with my CC via Pay Pal for the most protection possible. It turns out that the size rating changes when one of the dimensions exceeds 48". I let him know of this so maybe he can get the package down to 47.5" or something.... You know, just take a sledge to the front tire and move it back a couple inches :o

Risk
Kidding aside, i would have forced him to go to his LBS and have them take the bike apart and into a shipping box.  Good luck with it and let us know how it goes.  I know of others who have bought bikes on ebay.  They have gotten good luck for the most part.  Hopefully your experience will be the same.

Got a message from the seller that the bike was boxed and shipped today. That makes it exactly 1 week from the date the auction ended, which in my opinion isn't too bad considering what a pain it can be to ship a large, somewhat fragile object on a busy schedule (at least I'm assuming he's busy because it took a week). I'll update this with pictures when it arrives. If you're terribly unlucky, my ugly mug might show up in some of those pictures wearing a big grin ;D

Bike arrived today, exactly one week from the day it shipped. I went to do my afternoon van run all bummed out and wondering if my bike would be here by the weekend so I can amaze you all with some stupendous crashes at Boyette... and when I got home there was a Specialized box by the door! Sha-wing, hello Cannondale Rush! The only upgrades I saw off-hand were the grips, saddle, and front derailer. It weighed in at 27#s, a full 5#s lighter than my Hard-Tail :o I'm probably going to get a full fitment done sometime next week and have the bike shop go over everything with a fine-tooth comb to make sure all bolts are torqued to spec, everything is adjusted properly, etc. I'll update this later with pictures... I took the first picture while the box was still leaning against the door :D
