Photo challenge

OK all you folks with cameras both still and video - land manager says if SWAMP can produce an identifiable picture of the panther on Boyette property they can get grant money for the preserve, which would ensure that it stays the way it is and no development battles to fend off.

Also, it would make it easier to have adjacent land connected (greenways) to allow the critter to roam as it has done for hundreds of years.

This grant would not close the trails, just enhance the strength that they have to keep it as is.

Also - scat, left over meals, anything that proves one is there, but don't be stupid!  They are wild and should not be approached if spotted.

I'm fairly certain that there is a Jaguarundi in the area. I saw it on the south end of Inner Loch Ness at the last bend just before you get to the road by the creek crossing. No evidence though. Big long bodied cat (guessing 4' long, hard to judge with the tail) but definitely no panther. He disappeared into the tall grass as soon as I came around the corner.

When I was last there saw some huge pawprints in the sand in the quadrant.  Thought it must have been a panther.

I'll start carrying my camera when I'm there.

What's a Jaguarundi?

They're called Otter Cats, they're long and low with flat faces. They roam from South America through Texas mostly in dense foliage near water. There are a bunch of reports in Florida so there's good reason to believe there's a sustainable feral population but they're very reclusive and secretive so officially they don't exist here despite many reported sightings. Park and forestry's official stance is that people are mistaking river otters for them. I saw something and it sure wasn't a river otter. That was a cat of some kind. Besides, if there were otters in the creeks and ponds at Boyette we would know cause you'd hear the things. There was a pair in the retaining pond by my apartment in South Florida, they're noisy as all hell when they get worked up and if they aren't sleeping or hunting they're playing. I'm open to alternative but I don't think it was a panther (too small and the shape just wasn't right), it was too big to be feral house cat, and had a long bushy tail so it wasn't a bobcat.

The cat I saw a couple of years ago was no jagarundi.  It was way too big; had to be at least 50/60 lbs.

Three years or so back someone sent a photo to the newspaper of a Florida panther in their backyard in Parrish, so they have been documented very nearby.

Also, the small lake between Palmetto and Vista Ridge had an otter in it a few months back.

I was gonna say, I've seen otters at both Boyette and Alafia. They are in alot more places than people think.

I was pretty sure I saw a Bobcat run in front of me on Ridgeline last weekend.  Either that or it was the bunny from the "Holy Grail"!
