The law is set!
« on: June 18, 2010, 11:27:52 AM »
OK so the wifey laid down the law. She knows I need a new bike for the trails but said there is no way she wants to finance a bike. That limits my options. I have a $600. limit to buy a bike cash. I really would like a full suspension and have looked online for used but even the used are more than that. I could get a Front Suspension 29er with disk brakes new at aj's for about that price. If I go that route I may want a used front suspension for cheaper. Why can't these choises be easier!!

Ok

at least you know your limit....Now ask all SWAMPERS about buying that full suspension you really want. Often used ones are on craigslist as well. You will be suprised how these things turn up. Be patiant youll get a break. many of us have been down this road before.

I suggest expanding your options and look beyond AJ's.  There are a few other HT 29er's out there in your price range.  If you don't want a 29er there are TONS of nice 26" hardtails out there in your range.

So what size bike do you need? My co-worker just sold his Giant large AC1 dual suspension bike with XT cranks, shifters, etx for 350.00.

There some used deals available.

Example if you're real short :http://tampa.craigslist.org/hil/bik/1796666204.html

Or if you can talk them down: http://tampa.craigslist.org/hdo/bik/1792851634.html
* Unfortunatley another of the idiots that list bikes for sale without identifying a size.

Or shop new here: http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/mountain_bikes.htm

Or if you ride a large, I have a 19" HT 600 that I've just built up with better specs that you would get on a new one from bikesdirect.com

Good deals at BikesDirect.  Only downside is you can't test ride them.

I dont' know what size bike I need. I am about 5'9".  Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe an 18" - 19" would fit.  I have looked every day on Craigslist. When I see a FS that looks decent even close to my price range I google the make to see how the reviews are. Not sure about some of the brands I see. I have heard the names Specialized, Giant, Gary Fisher, Cannondale. But when they start throwing others at me like Kona, Diamondback, Motobecane, I don't know if they are good or not.

I found a Trek Y22 Carbo Fiber 18" frame. The only defect, is that the Carbon Fiber front suspension must have dried out the seals due to non-use. I figure if I can get it cheap enough I can replace the from suspension.

Check out this bike, Brand new from Jensen.. http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/BI279B03-Jamis+Dakar+Xc+Bike+08.aspx

The frame is OK, The Suspension is decent, has good overall components that can be upgraded later. The major benefit is it is new, a very good brand, it includes clipless pedals, no fixing up needed, full warranty on all parts, http://www.jamisbikes.com/usa/tech/warranty.html

at 5' 9" i would suggest the 19" frame

I bought my wife a new Giant Yukon FX for $600 from AJ's.  It is an '08, but brand new with warranty and LBS support.  Ask the bike shops what they have for new "older" stock.  Good luck.

Dude - ACT ON THIS ONE

http://tampa.craigslist.org/pnl/bik/1798486159.html

I just got off the phione with the guy because it didn't have the size listed.  He's 6 foot and you at 5'9" will probably fit fine on it.

Trek Fuel 90, F/S, spare chain, shock pump ($80 value), new tires, platform and clipless pedals, he says recent shop work $160, seat post rack and pack as pictured. $400.  Easily under your budget and what looks like a very worthy buy.

Go throw a leg over it and check the welds just to be sure. (As you should do with any used bike).
