New back-up bike...
« on: June 29, 2010, 08:29:08 AM »
So I bought a frame the other day for a good price, $10.. 2002 Specialized 21" A1 FS Hotrock (this is the adult sized one that came just before the Hardrock Sport) http://www.specialized.com/zz/fr/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?arc=2005&sid=02Hotrock&gold_ses=

it had the fork, handle bars, stem, partial brakes, crankset, and broken rear derailluer. it has a mark on the frame from tire rub, but overall good condition. I am going to set this up as a 1x7 with a 32t front and 14x28 cassette from the Raleigh I bought at goodwill..

swapping over the wheels w/ cassette and rear sifter from the Raleigh I bought for $20 at goodwill and picked up a seat post, seat, and brakes from AJ's... should be about $70 total into the bike when complete. Will post a picture when all done, may even take it to TNR tonight...

Anyway, it is something to tinker with that did not cost much...

Be careful! Hotrock is Specialized's line for kids, even though there is some big kids now a days, i dont think that bike was intended for a 260lb grown up.

This one was.. it is made for Adults.. it was the prequel to the Hardrock and I confirmed it with Casey at AJ"s yesterday... I dont think any kids were riding 21" frames in 2002 ;)

My "backup" bike ( loaner bike) is now finished as well. Motobecane HT600 hard tail ( with your old fork ).

* I have way more $$$ in mine though as I did go with pretty much all new drive train along with the parts I already had.

So, two of us that will soon try out the hardtail thing ( gota ride it at least once ) and learn to appreciate our full suspension bikes even more.

Actually, the seat post I bought at AJ's was a suspension Seat post.. ;)... But the Spec's on Specialized website had the seat tube size wrong, so I have to take it back, but maybe they will have it in the right size...

So is my Quote, "Sinner"... When David Spade got caught Spanking his Monkey in the hotel room later that  night... I can pretty much quote every line of Tommy Boy... ;)

Got it all up and running today.. I was trying to use the crank set that came on the Specialized, but the chain line would not work with the cassette from the Raleigh so I ended up using the crank set from it. It is set up as a 1x6 32t front and 11-24 rear. The front shock is soft and may not last long with my weight, but we will see. Since it is a 21" frame, it fits me perfect.

not the fanciest, not the prettiest, not the lightest, but a good kick around bike that gave me practice on working on my own bike... Got about $80 in it total with the most expensive things being the seat post and brakes.
