Indoor mtb park?
« on: September 15, 2010, 06:54:46 PM »
What a great time for someone to rent one of the many warehouses in the are and build a indoor mtb park.Somewhere in the gandy area st pete or tampa would be very busy. There is even an old indoor skate park on ulmerton rd available.
Just thought I would put the idea out there.

Most people on here ride XC--so i don't think a MTB park would interest  them much.

I thought the same thing ( that an indoor park would not have much for me, a XC guy). Boy was I wrong!

Two years ago I had the opportunity to go to Ray's Indoor Park in Cleveland in November. That place is massive, pictures do not do justice. There was a really nice XC loop that runs all through the building up through the rafters and even has some jump options if inclined to . Really, really fun! Also , the sport and expert sections were great skill building areas where one could spend a lot of time on multiple different lines, including rocks, logs, bridges, skinnies, etc. Expert section ( which I stayed off of) had more radical options including teeters, moving bridges, much more technical , skinnier lines etc. Nice pump track section also. There was something for everybody; bmx , jump areas , etc.

Plus in an area where normal riding is shut down to do inclement weather, it gives locals a great place to hang out and keep sharp and improve skills. Here in FL, it may be more a harder draw for riders though, as I would much prefer singletrack outdoors, but an indoor park may have its place.

There is actually preliminary plans at the new mountain bike park area in Orlando to have an indoor park!

Great idea...never been to one, but it would definitely be awesome...Just like Boing! in Brandon...who would have thought that a bunch of 30+ year olds would love indoor trampolining so much!  Indoor funhouses for adults (whatever the medium) will always have a crowd at nights and on the weekends!

I would think the insurance alone would be crazy expensive to run this sort of place.

I am guessing (in order to do it right) it would be in the multimillions...just to find warehouse space in a fairly centralized location alone would be super expensive even BEFORE buildout!

I would think the place is still going to need an insurance policy with heft liability limits.  Doubt a bank loaning money for a venture like this will see a waiver as beeing sufficient to protect themselves.

Hi guys,

I dont post on here often but this topic peaked my interest.  I run the local Trips For Kids Chapter and we have been looking into creating a Mountain Bike youth Center ( Think boys and girls club but strictly focused on mountain biking).  I have been talking with Local Park people about using a regional park that has recently lost its funding and has started to get run down.  The thinking was we could come in there and clean up and maintain in it in return for being allowed to set up our youth center there. The only problem with this is we target "at risk" kids and would want this to function as an afterschool program and having an after school program 45 minutes to an hour from the kids we target creates some challenges.

Reading this topic a light bulb went off.  What if we created an indoor mountain bike youth center within the Tampa City limits (close to the kids we work with) that would be open to the public with the proceeds going to to operation of our program.  This would creat a safe haven for kids to get off the streets, introduce kids to mountain biking, and provide the public with an indoor mountain bike park.

If any of you are truly interested in seeing if something like this really could be created please contact me at chris@mtbyouthride.org and we will look into creating an exploratory committee that will look into:

  • initial start up costs
  • possible locations
  • possible donors(local, state, and national)

Curious how the skate parks work with insurance, waivers, etc.  We don't have many here (I can only think of that one near Ybor) but that may be something to model it after.
