GeoMan stops selling the MagicShine lights
« on: November 16, 2010, 07:42:02 AM »
Well this stinks...  I had just bought the 900 and the 1400 with the money I made from selling my Stella.  I got an email yesterday that GeoMan had stop selling the MagicShine due to "our concerns regarding the safety, quality, and performance of Magicshine's lithium-ion battery packs sold by Geomangear between July 2009 and November 2010."  I had notice that the battery on one of my lights didn't last the full 3 hrs on high it was supposed to but I had not done a long night ride to confirm.  The only good thing is that GeoMan has a decent customer service reputation and is looking at options to replace all the battery packs we bought from him.

"Geomangear will provide recall information and instructions directly to our affected customers after our final corrective action plan has been approved by the Safety Commission."

Sorry if you are one of those affected.

Glad I got my replacement lighthead a few weeks ago. Kinda makes me wish I had gotten a spare battery. Guess I can always make a new one with some 18650 cells if this pack dies.

He makes it sound like he will be replacing the batteries.

Yeah, they are still selling the lights, just not battery packs.  I am still thinking of picking up a 1400 light to go with my 900.  I bought two batteries when I got my 900.

That 1400 looks pretty sweet, especially since you can either have all on, or just the two little lights.

Is it possible to build your own battery pack for those lights?

Well it is getting worse... Yesterday, GEOMAN sent out another email stating to stop using the light.  To store it outside your home and to keep it in a firewproof metal case.  Hmmm....  Sorry for those of you who bought the light after many of us talked about it here for the last year or so.  I sure hope GeoMan is able to pull the recall/replacement off.  They must's sold thousands of them and not sure how they are going to be able to cover it.

The person above almost burned his house down when he store his battery in a closet.  NOt sure if it was damaged or short circuited or what but I sure don't want this to happen to anyone.  I may have to go get a fireproof case for all my batteries now.    :'(

More on the pics above here:  http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=lf#!/album.php?aid=259457&id=196811798535

BE CAREFUL and keep an eye on your battery (any Li-ion) when charging, storing, and carying.  Don't rely on your "smart" charger to save your battery from going up in smoke.  If you do drop/crash with battery, inspect it to make sure something hasn't gone wrong.  Anyway, many are reporting no problems with it.  I'll continue to use mine but probably charge away from my house or anyting flamable.  When using, if it gets too hot, give it a rest.

I got the original email, and then an email last night regarding his flood of emails...but nothing about potential fire-hazards?

Yikes.  Don't want the Chinese light to burn a hole in someone's Chinese drywall.  ;)

Alan,
Look at the light you have closely.  I am looking at my Light and Motion Seca 700 ($500).  The battery is also made in China.

Orion,
You are right.  Sorry about that.  GeoMan is choosing his words carefully.  He has not use the word fire or stated clearly what the problem is or what is happening to the batteries and which ones specifically.  Just keeps stating that they will be replaced.  I got the info from late night reading on various forums.  I did find this statement from GeoMan on the MTBr forum though.

"Yes our battery experts have suggested we should include ALL Magicshine batteries in this recall. We advise not to use, and you can exercize extreme caution and store outdoors to ensure safety." http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?p=7511973#post7511973

Is the other posters that are talking about batteries (any Li-ION) battery catching on fire.  Laptops, cell phones... all have had recalls at some point.

was this a classic case of "you get what you pay for"?

or were they really expensive lights?
