Crooms and Hunting
« on: November 19, 2010, 08:23:17 PM »
We are coming down for Thanksgiving week and noticed that it may be hunting season at Crooms. Is this an issue and should we avoid the area?

Thanks,
Alan

As of last year they leave Croom open during hunting season.  Early morning the hunters are out.  If you go out at say 9:ish not too likely your paths will cross.  Just don't have a white hand towel or hanky hanging out of your bike shorts. Man, just thinking about it makes me want to get my Croom fix!

Me personally I avoid croom during hunting time.  We have to many other options to even take a chance.  Way I figure it is let the hunters have their time, I'll ride Santos or Boyette.  :)

That is the attituded I have in our area because they hunt all day. But if they are out by 10am I don't mind going at 2pm. Is that the case? I agree that they deserve their time and I don't want to take it away from them. The reason I picked Crooms is because it is close to where I am staying. The others appear to be at least an hour away.

Thanks again.

We are actually staying up in Leesburg and will ride one day at Santos. We are heading just north of Tarpon Springs for a visit with her mom and I was looking for a place to ride during the visit.  ;)  Crooms looked the closest. No big deal though. I can always go fly my kite at the beach and hit Crooms next time.

Hope some of you Swamp folks will be at Ididaride. It's always good to ride with you. Also, we have the place at Tanasi if anyone makes it up this way. We don't mind a few guests and we have plenty of room. Ask any time.

I try to avoid Croom after gun season starts..it seems they're out there any time of day, judging by the pickem' up trucks I see on the fire roads...I do wear an orange mesh safety vest though,so if u ride I'd recommend one...gonna be super sandy with lack of rain,so heads up... :-\

rode out there yesterday. saw 4 hunters and  ton of 4X4's parked on the FS roads - one hunter sitting on the trail at the top of heart break hill. He said "ya'll er takin' yer chances out here".

we started about 9:30 or so in the morning and left at 2PM.

saw 3-4 deer stands as well. one of them within 3 feet of the singletrack.

it's a tough call.... most likely not going to get hit by a round... but you never know. more likely to upset them for scaring off the prey.

Hunters pay good money to be out there and really it is not that long of a season. I stay away and give them their time to hunt. To many other good places to ride...
