you can run the SB8 up front too, I do it, ride very aggressive in corners and all and have no issues.  I like the looks of the new kenda Slant 6 if I were going to mix and match  I'd roll that up front.

Lots of guys seem happy with the Specialized Captain.  Seems it would be a nice front tire if you want a little more grip up front than the SB8 can provide.

I think the captain is a great rear tire.  Up front however it lost grip in transition and was not confidence inspiring (for me).

I've talked this tire up a ton, but I love it....Bontrager XDX. High volume, fast rolling, and great traction.  They look like an SB8 but with larger knobs further spaced apart.  Downsides are the compound is fairly soft (wear quickly) and they are discontinued.  I'm giving the 29-3 TLR (2.25 size) a shot this weekend.  Tread pattern is pretty aggressive and they supposedly roll pretty fast.

I will agree with this except for if it is the slightest bit wet. Then you are on a slip and slide. Personally I run a Maxxis Crossmark on the front.

Nevegal up front, I had a Fast Trak LK out back that was like riding with a greasy wheel. I run a maxxis ignitor in the back and that plus the nevegal up front keep me pretty connected.

Maxxis Ardent 2.4  It's a beast but rolls over everything very well.  I run Crossmark on rear.  Ardent is like having 2 inches of suspension on the Monkey.

Scott has sold me on the 2bliss technology of Specialized tires. Used to run Maxxis ignitors whick i really like, except no UST bead. After a while the bead started leaking with sealant(1yr). Now running Fast trak rear and Captain up front. Both 2bliss Sworks. They are super light and hook pretty good for me. Running both around 23-26psi, 29er of course.

I agree with JCMTB on the Maxxis Aspens - I've been running them since November, and I really like the way they hook up. They are very similar to the Kosmic Lites, but with a little more aggressive center knob.

Before that, I was running a Kosmic Lite on the back and a Kenda Karma on the front. The Karma did a really good job connecting to the trail, although it didn't seem to be as fast rolling...

...ahhh the classic conundrum - traction vs. speed...
