sometimes you have to go slow to go fast
« on: January 24, 2011, 07:44:38 PM »
one of the main variables that say determines how fast you can go over a long period of time is how efficient you are at propelling yourself.

My VO2 max and my Lactate threshold havent improved much over a 3-4 day period.  Here is an example of how much a difference slowing things down and rolling smoothly through turns and over things effects speed.

Here are 2 rides I did - same bike / same trail - the only difference is that I actually road more off road on the second attempt.  In just 2 rides between the 2 I was able to follow Gregg and follow Rob Roberts and Scott.  By following their lines and learning how riders that are better than me roll through corners, I was able to make a HUGE gain in speed and at the same time work WAY less.  I noticed there was something all 3 of these guys did - SLOW DOWN - they didnt make sudden herky jerky movements - they just slowly let the bike track and kept their momentum up by doing less.  By going slower into the corners, your exit speed seems faster and you dont have to waste watts/power pushing hard to get back up to speed.

ride 1 - distance 43.49 miles / time 3 hours 42 minutes / ave speed 11.8 MPH / ave HR 151 BPM

ride 2 - distance 46.67miles / time 3 hours 47 minutes / ave speed 12.6 MPH / ave HR 151 BPM

My old boss always said "Work smarter not harder." The same applies to riding... Sometimes.
My bike is more than a toy; it's my vessel.

Good to see you are getting more confident.

I am a big believer in slowing down to go faster.

So next time we ride, I can pedal? ;D

ain't no joke. karlos can ride that silly fixed gear faster in some cases that a coasty bike. i pondered the same thing for a long while... till he finally said something that clicked. he can't speed through turns like a coasty with the outside pedal down. he has to turn the cracks the whole time. so in order not to dig that pedal in the dirt and risk a flight over teh bars, he had to slow down.

I think he did the top-secret renegade run on a fixie averaging somewhere close to 11-12 mph for a 70 mile ride. blows my mind.

I don't have much in the way of cornering skills. or at least not as much as i'd like to have.

one thing that i did learn ... keep your eyes level with the horizon. i found that if i kept me head and neck in line with my spine it would cause just enough spacial distortion that i would exit the turn late.

That and push down on the inside grip just a little....

I'm old school I guess, races are won in the corners more so than on the straights. ( Or maby that was just in my past life as a moto racer?

Anyway, I like corners way better than straights, what's up with that?

ps. watch out fror Gregg on paved straights... ;D

a good thing to practice is setting your speed before you enter the turn and keep your hands off the brake as much as possible.
