Who Uses Bike Journal?
« on: March 27, 2007, 02:15:41 PM »
So heres a new thread about Bike Journal..  I know all of you who are posting miles up there..   8)

But which of you guys are using it as a tool...   ::)

to see if your getting faster, or riding the same old trails all the time or whatever..

Just wondering if you guys are looking back at old entries from earlier in the year and trying to compare..  maybe you were testing something or whatever..

Thanks for the input.

-Bob  ;D

p.s. for those of you who do not know about  Bike Journal   ..check it out..

I dont know about that.. I just want to know if anyone is actually looking at the information that they post in Bike Journal.

I know its nice to have a lot of miles, but I'm just wondering if anyone is using Bike Journal as a tool to train or anything

I mainly use it to keep me on track for my mileage goals.

50 miles per week
200 miles per month
624 miles per quarter
2500 miles per year

Seems like I am always looking back to see where/when I missed miles.

Although I have recently added a few fields to my BikeJournal entries that I think will help a lot going forward.

RPE (Rating of Perceived Exertion) is a big one for me
Heart Rate Avg / Max help when compared to other items too.

Example: I may find a particular ride feels very hard (RPE of 7 say) but my heart rate and average speed tell me otherwise.

Squiggy Lap 2 is an example.  I had an RPE of 8.5; HR av of 158 bpm, Max of 168.
The lap FELT harder than lap 1 but overall I exerted less energy in lap 2 than lap 1.

Although I attribute that overall lap 2 result to having to stop or slow twice for two slower riders.

I do compare some with the tools but not for training purposes.

Bob,
I just use it to stay ahead of you on the miles....  ;D ;D ;D

I do all my comparisions with my GPS web based cell phone.  It keep more information for me automatically right out of my phone.  It is not as accurate on the miles count as my bike computer and it doesn't keep track of my hart rate.  But it does keep track of GPS coordinates of the ride so I can see the map.  I can load up previously used route and race against it right on my cell phone.  It shows me where I was at that time at the previous ride compare to where I am at hte current ride.  Sort of like chase the ghost type of ride.  It also keep elevation changes for me and other things.  I can pull a particular ride section and see what my speed was through that portion.  It keeps of all my speed information, calories, miles, etc....

I only use BikeJournal to log miles for SWAMP and no other reason.  My preparation/training/comparision, i do right on my cell phone or over the web via the data that gets loaded direclty from my cell phone.

After a few months I want to go back and compare the different trails and how I did.  I'm trying to ride the same bikes on the same trails as the previous ride to make it honest.

Some thing I recently started using was the Suunto T4 wrist top computer with the heart rate monitor and Bike POD. It records mileage, time, current speed, average speed, calories burned, and it is all down loaded into my computer where I can analyze the info and create a program or use the coach feature to plan my workouts.  The only thing it doesn't do is keep you on your diet.  When you also pair it with the GPS pod it will plot out your courses along with speeds on differnt sections.  It really is an awsome tool. I have been using it for running for a while but recently had to stop running. If y'all have any questions on it let me know I will bring it out to trout creek this weekend.

I blog on mtbr.com but that's about all. I reset my computer on the IH each day I ride it, but I don't write down how many miles I go. It does have an odometer so it's keeping track of how many miles get put on the bike.

the cool thing is that I can go back a week or even the past 3 months on my watch and see my progress. It works well for me.

Good points Kevan. I'm using it to log miles and keep track of my heart rate and performance on different rides. The interclub miles competition keeps me looking forward to the next ride. I need to compare my past months rides more often though.
