Great Places to Ride within 12 hrs driving
« on: July 12, 2011, 10:26:52 AM »
I have a few days to escape the floridian heat, but don't want to drive further then 12 hrs.
What great MTB destinations you guys would recommend within this distance; North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, etc. ?

Thank you !

So many choices--- go to http://www.singletracks.com/mountain-bike/trails.php and look at the map... Augusta GA has the Fats system, Atlanta area has many, so does South TN...

Alot of great trails around Brevard also. The stuff in Pisgah and Dupont are really good, and not far from there are the trails at Mills River and Bent Creek. West of there you have the stuff around Fontana Lake, which would be Tsali and Flint Ridge, which both are nice trails. The trails at Jackrabbit are super fun but not very technical, that is near Hendersonville, NC if my memory is correct. The Tanasi trials by the Ocoee whitewater center in TN are pretty nice also.

FATS is another awsome trail system, its in North Augusta, SC. it stands for Fork Area Trails

A 'good' ride is one that you can walk away. A'great' ride is one after which you can use the bike again.

Fats is great but would probably be just as hot as FL

And is a one trick pony, Ellijay gives you buff, gnar, climbing for miles, bike park, remote etc:

Slowfatguy is right brevard is beautiful, my grandmother is the only female forest ranger at dupont and the trails are amazing. Miles and miles of forest with several waterfalls. Lots of scenery and miles from everything, it's about 11 hours from here but well worth the trip. I go every year

If you are only going for a few days my first choice would be Elijay and stay at Mulberry Gap and ride the Bear Creek & Pinhoti Trails.  They are only 8 hours or so from here and just a great trail system.  If you want to drive longer (around 11 hours) you can hit the Bent Creek, Dupont & Pisgah trails in the Asheville area as they are all pretty great too(especially Dupont).
