29er Questions for newbie
« on: August 18, 2011, 09:35:52 PM »
Ok guys, I am new so forgive my ignorance. I have been doing lots of research and am very confused. What exactly defines a bike as a 29er. Is it only the tire/wheel size or are there other things also? for instance while looking at Treks website I noticed that some of the "29ers" have 700c size tires. There are other bikes also such as the DS series that also have 700c size tires so would the DS series technically be 29ers? Sorry for what is probably a basic question but I have search high and low for the answer to no avail.

Thanks
Marc

700c (centimeter) tires are 29 inch tires... the two are interchangeable. 700c is more commonly used to describe road bike tires...

700c is not 29er.

not technically at least.

a 700c rim with a fat knobby tire makes a 29er.

if you were to put a skinny tire on a 700 c and measure it all the way around you would not come up with 29 inches.

Depends on the size of the tire... but I don't want to confuse you further ;)

29er: Clown Bike or a bike that comes with a big set of clown shoes and a big red nose piece.

29er: Fad bike

29er: Magical bike that will turn anyone in to a pro rider

29er: A bike that most people will not have a spare tube that will fit if you have a flat

29er: Generally a heavier bike that is slower turning and hard to get up to speed, but really a hauls when you finally get there. ( Note: If massive $$$ are applied these traits do not apply. See Specialilized S-Works 29er for 10K)

29er: Available as a hard tail that rides like a 4" suspenion bike ( Not!)

29er: All or none of the above?

29er: A bike with two sizes larger wheels than most people ride ( 26")
