croom camping trails accesible from campgrounds?
« on: December 06, 2011, 11:51:35 AM »
Hello.. we are planning a weekend trip from Naples to Croom. We wanted to Camp at any of the three campgrounds in the Silver Springs Recreation Area. Now I am trouble actually finding them. Are the Croom trails accesible via bike from these campgrounds or do we need to go there via car from the campgrounds? Are these campgrounds usually filled up pretty quick, were were going to arrive later Friday evening.

Thanks for you help

Stefan

Do you mean Silver Lake or Silver Glen campgrounds?
If so, yes, you can ride a mile or two up the Withlacoochee State Trail (paved) to get to the Mountain Bike trails. No driving required.

should be plenty of room to camp, no reservations are taken.. the road that goes into the campground from Croom Ridal road is HERE
28.572274,-82.223954 - Google Maps

and the paved Withlacoochee trail is right there on the left so you can take that north to the dirt trails

I live about 5 miles up the road from the campgrounds and yes they fill up quick.  The rear campground of the 3 is primitive only I believe, the front two have hook ups.  Like another poster said it's first come first serve and that time of year all the snowbird campers are making their laps around Florida State and County Parks.  Might be tough finding a spot if you are arriving Friday as I'd expect the campgrounds to be 3/4's full without the ride.  If more info is needed message me and I'll give you my cell number.

If you end up needing a backup plan, there is a great campground near by called sertoma youth ranch. It is about 10 miles from the trails.
