Steel Suggestions?
« on: February 07, 2012, 02:18:06 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I'm looking into getting a steel HT and would like to get some suggestions. I would be using it for an all around bike that I can occasionally take out to the trails like MBR and Carter. I would eventually like to build it up as a light weight, as light weight for steel that is, bike.

Here is what I am looking for:

16"-17" Steel Frame

Not too heavy. Ideally, I would want the complete bike to be under 25 lbs.

I would even be interested in an older frame, but would like to have disc brakes.

$1000.00

I've been looking online at the Jamis Dragon Pro, On One Inbred, and Surly Troll. I cannot find any of these bike at any LBS to test ride them so I want to see if anyone has any advice.

Thanks in advance for any input.

I forgot to mention that I would be open to 26 or 29, hell, even a 650.

Also forgot to mention the Salsa El Mariachi, but I am getting priced out of most of these bikes with my budget:(

I know I'm most likely going to have to get a used bike.

Thanks

Redline moncog (comes in a 26er or 29er) but is a single speed (if you're up for it - easier than most who haven't tried it think).

Good Luck!

Also, Niner makes a cheaper bike, the SIR (steel is real), but not sure if you could build it up for the price range you're looking for.  You COULD try an Origin 8 29er, they come in steel.

Don't think you can get the monocog under 25 lbs but the redline flight you will.  Even go 1x9.  Is my current backup bike setup under 24 lbs.

My XL (21") Monocog is 28.4lbs with a fairly hefty wheelset, tank tires, not so light components, and full feedbag on the bar.  I think you could get to 25lbs on a 16-17" Monocog on somewhat of a budget with smart choices.

my moncog was 26lbs with carbon fork, and 2.4 tire on the front with a 2.25 on the back i could have gotten it down more but didnt feel it was worth it.

Surly Karate Monkey is another good choice for a budget friendly steel frame.  Going to be lighter than the Monocog.

Thanks for the input everyone. I was able to get me a sub 25 lbs. steel single speed. It's my first SS and I already like it! I hope it can help me get my leg/lungs in proper shape to enjoy it!

I found and bought a used Spot Longboard on CL. Just got back from Flatwoods. Had a great time. (Think I have caught the SS bug!) Can't wait to see how it does at Carter and /or Boyette next weekend!
