Dangerous Day at Balm-Boyette
« on: May 04, 2013, 07:48:31 PM »
Today at Balm, I saw a 2 foot corral snake on East Meadow, had a hawk fly about a foot in front of me on Upper Spider Berm, and then thrashing on woods trail, turn a corner and an at least 8 foot gator was in the middle of the trail about 30 feet away staring me down!  I slam on the breaks, lay the bike down and slide to a stop about 15 feet in front of it, and it crouched down, opened its jaws and hissed at me.  :o  Needless to say I about pooped myself and was doing the curly shuffle on the ground trying to scoot back away from it, yelling "OH SH#$, GET BACK, GET BACK, GET BACK" to my dad who was riding behind me, LOL.  He said the look on my face was hilarious.  Never expected that on Woods Trail!  Then on the ride out we saw the bobcat.  Crazy day, Careful out there with the wildlife this springtime!

sounds like a normal day in the woods up here in brooksville lol. i saw a nice size bobcat over at Alafia but have yet to see the gator or any real snakes. Coral snakes are fine, its the large rattlers i worry bout. killed a 6ft easter diamond in my front yard some time ago. she tasted pretty good  ;D lol shoulda snapped a pic of the gator though, that would been a cool shot with him mouth wide staring you down lol.

We know of a few who have been spooked by Sashquash while night riding at Boyette.  There are also those who have been abducted by the Trail Gods (aka Aliens) but nobody believes them.   ;D

Hey guys, just to clarify, the bear spray thing is tongue in cheek. Please don't go around spraying innocent gators or gopher tortoises in the face! This is their home, not ours, so respect the wildlife and just safely back off if you are in a situation.  We are the intruders here, not them.

I just posted the bear spray thing in response to somebody else's comment about human crazies.  I don't own a can of bear spray and have never used the stuff. Only ever carried it when I was young out West in real bear country on long backpacking trips.  Even then, the rangers told us to only use the stuff as a last resort if the animal was actually charging you.  In most cases, you just made a lot of noise and yelled, they would run away.

I assume this is pretty nasty stuff and should only be used as a last resort if you find yourself in the sights of a 600 lb animal trying to eat you, face eating crackheads in Miami, or zombies.
(may not work on zombies either, hasn't been properly tested, so in this instance, use at your own risk)

i should hope u wouldnt have to clarify....its illegal to harrass the wildlife and im sure spraying them for fun is included lol. gators usually will run at u a short distance and stop even if they do it at all. hell ive had more issues with a mother hog than any gator. ive had them swim right by and not even pay any attention to me. but as a skinny guy i probly dont look too filling lol.

op-i sent a pm to you bout a ride.
