13 fuel ex 8 or giant trance 29 2
« on: July 21, 2013, 04:59:21 PM »
So I got the green light from the wife to get a new bike. I can't decide between the 13 trek fuel ex 8 for 2399.99 or the giant trance x 29 2 for 2700.00. I currently am riding a specialized hardrock that is a long way from stock and has been a great bike but my back says it is time for dual suspension. I have never been on a 29er in the woods and am not sure I will like it as I have a playful and nimble style. What to do?

Both are nice bikes, I've ridden the higher end models ( assuming the Trek is also a 29), go with best shop and cost... try to ride both on a demo day or do a RENTAL.

The trek is a 26er. I am still not sold on the 29er mainly because I love some urban assault and having a whipable bike. I had an opportunity to ride a Remedy in Morrison, CO and loved the ride and the trek is on sale and a great deal so I think I am leaning that way. However, I can't ignore all the praise of the trance 29er.

Ride a few 29ers before passing judgement on the handling.

Unfortunatley, I believe 26" are going the way of XTR 8 Speed parts (which I am still using after 8 years, but about to change to 9 speed because XTR 8 Speed parts are obsolete).

Why not give a Trance 27.5 or Trek 27.5 a try, might be the sweet spot for you.

I think you mean Trance 1, the Trance 2 only retails for $1925.

I agree that the shop is important and that 26ers are becoming obsolete.

I've ridden a 650b way more than a 29er, and I prefer the 29er. There is no doubt it is more work to get those big wheels spinning and you can't throw the bike around, but to me, the rollover ability of the big wheels is easily worth it. But while many will argue that the 29-inch wheel is too big, I haven't heard anyone deny that the 650b is superior to the 26er.

There are tons of buzz words associated with wheel sizes. End of the day the only opinion that matters is your own. Go ride a ton and buy the one that suits you best regardless of what fadwagon it may or may not fall on.

Well, I went with a '13 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Elite 26". I got a  smoking deal from AJ's Bikes and Boards. 4100.00 msrp for 2700.00. Couldn't say no.
