E Bikes! Allowed on the trail
« on: May 05, 2016, 11:02:31 AM »
I brought this up a few day ago on Facebook and the post got heated and was deleted. What is Swamps stand on E bikes? I have been seeing a few E bike on the trail especially Boyette. Are they allowed? If we allow stock E bikes on the trail what is keeping people from modifying them. I have seen E bike capable of 8000 watts, That's 16 times what the average person puts out. If they are not allowed how are we going to police this especially at Boyette.

Thanks E

The problem is that the trails are "no motorized vehicles", but FL law defines bicycles with electric assist, and a max speed of 20mph on level ground, as bicycles, and not motorized vehicles. Put a gas motor on it, it is a motor vehicle. Put a thumb throttle on the electric bike and it is a motor vehicle.

I don't want to see ebikes on the trails, but until someone of authority makes a decision that can be upheld, I think that there is nothing that can be done to prevent it.

Mark my words we will soon see heavily modified E bikes doing 40-50mph on the trail. Trail closures coming up >:(

Swamp has the authority. If people want trails to ride ebikes on, then let them cut 'em. If you see someone on an ebike, just tell them they aren't allowed and if they don't head to the exit, then report them to the trail boss, who can work with the land manager on issuing a trespass warrant.
