Hog Heaven
« on: June 11, 2007, 09:32:39 AM »
At Morris Bridge on Saturday and took that "side trail" off Gatorbait, right where you come out of the roots and you're on that straight almost levee trail.  Well, that trail took me to a double track, looked like a 4-wheeler trail which turned out to be a horse trail.  I kept riding it East I think, thinking that it would take me somewhere without having to back-track.  I'd gone a good ways when I see 2 piglets and I stop, looking for momma.  She came out and I waited for them to move on which they did.  I rode on about 200 yards when I saw 4 more piglets and BIG MOMMA and another huge hog with them.  Concerned, I stopped again and waited and had to start clapping to get their attention and get them moving.  Got to where I thought they were safely off the trail and clapped again to keep them moving and Pumba shot out from under a stump about 20 feet to my right!  At this point the bibs are toast.  I ride on another 400 yards around a bend and there's 2 giant black boar standing in the middle of the trail.  At that point with pigs in front and behind me and I'm alone it just didn't feel "right", you know?  I ended up having to back-track the whole way back.  Wound up exhausted and safe but not without a few more gray hairs I can assure you.

OK, it happened again.  Morris Bridge yesterday about 10 a.m.  Just about a 1/4 mile down the main trail after leaving the MB parking lot, 4 or 5 pigs, babies and 2 large ones.  Right on the side of the trail and jump up and haul a** and scare the crap out of you.  THEN, out on Grandpa, I round a bend and another one shoots out of palmettos right next to the trail.  Is this normal?  Does everyone else have these close encounters with freakin' hogs every time they ride?  If you do too, does it not scare the crap out of you as well?  Anyone ever been unlucky enough to have any physical contact, been chased? I've heard since I was a kid to stay away especially when they have babies and every time I see them out there, there's babies, so yeah, I'm freaked.

At a night ride I had one jump out of the scrub and into the trail and run in front of me for about 20 or 30 feet. It was really surreal. Completely dark except for our lights. I am pretty sure that the pig thought it was running for it's life.

That's what the matches were for.  I thought they were for lighting your own gas after eating all those energy bars. ;D
It's not just fun, it's an addiction!
