After hitting Rattlesnake we come upon our 'big' decision for a typical Santos ride - we either do Ant Hill in what I would consider to be 'backwards' and then do John Brown 'backwards' or do John Brown forwards and then Anthill forwards.

Thanks Bill,
I'll try it that way next time.  It was my 4th day of straight riding in the middle GA hills.  I was just riding like a man possessed trying to beat the darkness and lighting bolts hunting down red trails.  I had no map and only my second time up there.  Too bad I don't live north of Tampa to go to Santos more often.

Next time you plan a trip out there, let me know and I can try to meet up with you and show you my route.  Even after the IMBA rework of the trails, Santos is still a bit of a maze and you can easily get lost.  On my first trip up there many years ago, I took a wrong turn somewhere and ended up riding through some open field, running out of water, coming back on the road after asking for directions back to the trailhead.

Congrats Sandpine, doing all the reds is very fun. Are you sure you don't have John Brown mixed up with another trail, I cleaned that my second time there and I still have a hard time cleaning RollerCoaster. Ant Hill was always the pain in the rump for me.

I hope I get my fork back for the club ride next Sunday. If not, think I could steal a loaner off one of you guys?

Sorry to go from Alafia to Santos.  It started off when peeps are avoiding Croom.  Then a challenge came between me and Bunny that goes back over a year.  I did go into John Brown form the south.  The side there a double track road is.  There is a kiosk with a map there.  A little bench and a 7-9 foot drop into a quartz pit.  Then it crawls up the big rocks again where it meets the other red trails.  I had no idea where I was but the sign did read John Brown.  Check out my GPS map that I posted.  Is on the south side of that big pit.

I didn't ride any of John Brown.  The flat portion of the trail inside the pit was blocked by trees and very tall grass.  Didn't look like a trail at all but more of shortcut to get out of the pit.  The other red trails there are very challenging.  I was only able to ride good portions of Rattlesnake.  I did Magic Mountain but the top with the rocks and only about 4-6 inches of clerance had my legs shaking.  Had to walk to top off.  Then the decent, I couldn;t clip in so I fell over to the right on my shoulder and decided to be safe and walked down.

I know where you went now...that's not really John Brown, just a little side excursion for the adventurous.

I went to Alafia this morning, got there around 9:15am and rode until 2 or so I think. I didn't see anyone I recognized though I made more friends out of strangers. These guys say they ride Alafia every Sunday morning at 8am, so maybe I'll end up with some consistent riding companions when the club rides WTA and Croom... :D

I'm trying to convince them to come to Santos with us next Sunday, we'll see how that goes.

Oh, and something is going wrong with my left knee. I bought a knee brace but it actually made it hurt worse ??? It hurts the most when I'm climbing and lean back for traction, or blast up a rocky climb where the bike jumps around a lot.

Could be the positioning of your seat, and height of seat.  If your knee hurts in the front the seat is too low.  If it hurts in the back the seat is too high.  You might have to adjust front to back positioning as well to tweak the leg extension you get when sliding up or back on the saddle.

Risk,
I have an old soccer injury from running stadium blitchers.  Twisted my knee then and it was never the same.  From time to time, if I don't angle my legs inwards properly and don't use my normal seat position it flairs up.  One way I would make it go away is to mainly "pull" with that leg instead of push down.  I would do that when the pain flaired up for about 3-4 minutes.  I would also check my seat and made user my knees where inward.  After only pulling with that leg and correcting everything else, the pain would go away.  Knee braces didn't help me either.

the biggest help i had was actually wedges - that is why most peoples knees get strained riding - here is a little on the subject of why most of us need wedges:

I had recently adjusted my seat to a higher position. I actually love the position of the seat and the power it gives me but I think that I set it too high. I'll lower it a couple inches and see if that make a difference. Personally, I think I need a set-back seat-post as well. I have the seat as far back as it can go and I still feel like I'm always riding on the tail edge of it.
