Okay racers, I'd like your opinions and ideas on food intake and hydration before a race and how many days ahead do you start? What type of foods, fluids and how much?

Lots of pastas beans rice,proteins,liquids,chocolate milk,aminos,all the time you will notice a difference

All good info, but what about amounts and when to eat, drink. I know you have to have some input here Harvey. ;) :) Other than water, (Those signs are fairly obvious),What signs or symptoms that you need to eat?

Sorry Ken, I'm kinda busy right now. No time for nutrition essays. Besides, you never know when the competition might be reading. ;)

Seriously, I'm pretty unscientific about what/when I eat. I eat when I'm hungry and I drink a lot of water. I eat very little processed food and I eat a lot of organic stuff. I like meat, but eat very little red meat and when I do, it's organic/free range.

I bought a couple of books on nutrition and a book on the nutritional balance of specific foods (carbs/protein/fat) last year with the intention of really figuring out my nutritional intake, but that went nowhere.

I just eat. And eat, and eat, and eat. ;D

Unscientific experimentation has shown me that there is a benefit to carbo-loading the last few days leading up to a race, though. You gain a couple of pounds, but your energy levels are off the charts.

Is life possible without it? But seriously Ken, I don't know if you are a user but the performance enhancing abilities of pre ride caffeine are real. More so maybe for me than others but real all the less ;D

I drink a little coffee but not usually before races or regular rides. I know cafeine can help but it's my understanding that it can cause dehydration. Not a problem if you are taking in enough water.

I am reading Joe Friel's "The Cyclist training bible" Joe states caffeine increases fatty acids in the blood reducing reliance on glycogen stores in the muscles. It also stimulates the central nervous system, decreasing the perception of fatigue. He also states the diuretic (dehydrating) effect happens mainly to NON exercising individuals. There are also indications of stronger muscle contractions thanks to the miracle known as STARBUCKS :)
