I've done this race twice. The first year I hit those stairs a bit too hot and didn't come down until somewhere in the second set (there's a landing halfway down). Blew my tire off the rim but somehow didn't damage the rim. Race over. The second time I used a set of semi-slicks for a bit of extra cushion (see the photo on the first page).

The guys who like to catch air launch right off those stairs, but the moral of the story is to know your limits and hit them accordingly. Translation: If you don't like your wheels to leave the ground, scrub some speed before hitting them.

going down is no big deal but going up a six step i would worry about the wheel.

I ran Schwalbe Kojak slicks last year.  Pumped them up to somewhere north of 70lbs and they worked great.

For those curious about the stairs, I found a photo of me just after the first set.  I had some butterflies in my stomach during the practice laps and after the first lap during the race...but they get much easier after each lap.

do you only race people in your own class?  some of the pics look like day time and some look like night.

I think the experts ran in the early evening, then the first round of the 2x, then everybody else ran, then the rest of 2x

Any tire recommendations for this?  Besides the Schwalbe Kojaks already mentioned.  Not that I doubt the effectiveness of the Schwalbe's, just looking for other options.  8)

There were guys out there on super aggressive MTB tires.  Doesn't really matter what tire you have...just what you are comfortable running.

I went with the Kojak because it was the widest slick that I could find at the time (26x2.00) and I wasn't sure how the skinnier ones would work with my wheelset.  I hate the way MTB tires handle on the road, so for me going with slicks was the only way to fly.
