Right about dusk on my racing the sun back to the parking lot out of the park I saw a big cat out on the wide smooth trail of Inner Loch Ness right before you get to the doubletrack by the creek crossing. Disappeared into the tall grass pretty quick. Somewhere between 3 and 4 feet long. Looked similiar to this Jaguarundi but the tail wasn't as long.



On the very first night ride I did out there I came around a corner on Swamp Thing and was face to face with a irritated big momma bobcat and her litter.


Last year I saw several big lizards sunning on the edge of the double track over by the quads that looked similar to a Nile Monitor but squatter than the one in this picture.

They blend into the brush right at the edge really well. I saw three and definitely would have missed two of them if they hadn't moved. Haven't seen any since it got cold. Maybe the temperature or the controlled burns got some of them.


Never seen a panther though.

Those are actually dangerous to the environment and the state is trying to kill them all....

So I've heard. I don't think I saw an actual nile monitor though. The ones I saw had more compact proportions than any monitor I've seen, shorter legs and fatter torso. The coloration was very similar to the monitor in that picture but darker.


Pretty sure, that's what I saw. I just found this page - http://nas.er.usgs.gov/queries/SpecimenViewer.aspx?SpecimenID=166844&SpeciesID=2617 - after looking around the internet a bit. So I'm pretty sure that's what it was. Black and White Tegu.

Boyette sure is an interesting place. I would like to see the panther, hopefully not up close though.

My mother got chased by a coyote in Seminole last month about a mile from Indian Rocks Beach. Who knew there were coyotes running amuck in Pinellas County???? With the giant prehistoric Lake Placid style alligators out there in Boyete nothing would surprise me.

I saw the same thing on SST. I was leading our small group on the way back to the parking lot and ran across one of these near the end. I came around a corner and it was sitting in the middle of the trail in a small patch of sunlight. I Thought I was seeing things. It ran off into the underbrush and I couldn't find it. The others caught up with me as I was crashing through the small trees and underbrush looking for it and none of them believed me. The fact you saw the same thing, and posted a photo verifies it for me. I know it was around 2-1/2-3 feet long, low slung and black with bright markings. Nasty looking bugger.

Anyone else seen the curly tail lizards which are also an invasive species? They're only about 6-8 inches long with a broad head like a snake. I was reading that they were mostly in the southern FL area but making their way north. They've obviously made it into our area.
