FrankenBike Ver. 2.0 AKA FrankenBLACK
« on: April 21, 2012, 12:01:42 PM »
Howdy SwampClub'ers!  I know it has been a while but living in TN now doesn't give me much cause to visit you Florida boys too much anymore but I thought it was appropriate to let you in on the makeover of the FrankenBike (original).

A little bit of back story:
This bike a true tribute to the mountain biking community.  After people you wonderful people on SwampClub.org learned I was cruising the trails on a Walmart rig, they all pitched in parts and built this bike for me.  The only stipulation is that if I ever get a new bike, this one must be given free of charge to someone interested in getting into the sport.  This type of community is what really got me hooked into the sport, the bike definitely helped too!

Here is how she looked when I first got her.

Anyway, after a few years of riding, Frankenbike was beat up.

Stripped down to the frame:

Paint and clear coat:

I also went ahead and made use of some left over brake caliper paint from my car.  I figured it was good enough for my vehicle...it is good enough for my bike LOL:

I went a little crazy with the red paint...but I think it brings everything together.

Here is the *pit.  Sorry for it not being clean...

The derailleurs and crank.  I wish I had red duct tape but olive drab 100 mile an hour tape will do the trick for now.

And the big picture.

I have been going with a red/black/silver theme and am still painting parts to match.  I still need to get a new chain, brake/derailleur cables, and some new grips, amongst other little things.  I should probably peruse the For Sale section on here.

The paint is just temporary until I have time/money to powdercoat it.  Anyway, I hope you guys like the changes hopefully one of these days I will actually have enough money for a new bike and I can pay this one forward.

Crazy how a little color can completely change how a bike looks. Nice!

Yeah it was a great crew, you guys definitely broke me off properly!  I am definitely still into it, I am a lifer.  I even convinced a buddy to try it out and he already went and bought a new Cannondale!  There are some good trails in TN within a few hours drive, the nearest trail to me is a small park with about 6 miles of trail that gets the job done...but it I want something more challenging I have to make an hour and a half drive to south of Nashville, which is the next nearest trail worth riding.

Have you ever made it to Columbia and ridden Chickasaw bike park? nice set of trails there. Where in Tennessee do you live?

No, I haven't.  I live in Clarksville, TN....I am stationed at Ft. Campbell.  Now that I have a riding buddy, once he gets his confidence up we plan on making some day trips.  I also found a local bike club sort of like SwampClub called COGS that I have been conversing with through their web forum and I plan to start tagging along on some of their trips/rides.

These folks have been very helpful to me when traveling in TN. Good info on their forum.
