After installing a set of Hayes 9's on the Trance build project, I was amazed by their power compared to the same brakes on my Anthem. It was then the memories of being launched over the bars of the Anthem came back to me (Ohhh those were good times Good times  Grin) It seems in my attempts to keep everything shiny and rust free, the application of (choose your lube spray of choice) to said brake rotors and calipers (pads) has over time diminished stopping power and with no comparison went unnoticed. This in moderation could be a good thing in some cases (see above reference to awesome superman like flight) but overall is probably something to keep in check. My two cents from the school of hard knocks. Smiley

Learned that one the hard way, huh?

Clean your rotors with soap and water or rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab - nothing else. Alcohol will also remove any errant lube. If you pads get contaminated with lube, though, the only thing you can do is replace them.

Oil from your fingers will have the same effect, so be careful.

Yeah, I will have to notch that one up to WHAT WAS I THINKING! It is common practice after every two or three rides after the bike has collected a enough trail grime to give her a light spray of 50% simple green 50% water and a low pressure rinse followed by a towel dry and then a spray of silicone on any moving parts or where I have noticed signs of rust/corrosion, in the past this has included the calipers and rotors. I don't think the silicone is the culprit but every third or fourth cleaning instead of the silicone I will use a non drying lube. So in the future it will be hand dry only for the brake system Grin

By the way--some guys I met at the Vortex work day have started their own rotor company. They have been perfecting them for quite a while and they have been tested against all the top brands and beat them. They were pretty impressive.  The stopping power is better but they do not dissipate heat quite as quick--but the trade off is that you have to use them less which doesn't make them heat up as quick anyway. The guys that have been using them swear by them. I will get the name, if any of you are interested?
