Something is missing from Heartbreak Ridge
« on: December 29, 2008, 10:35:35 AM »
So we enjoyed beautiful weather yesterday morning at Wilderness Park.  We rode Heartbreak Ridge like we always do.  I hadn't been able to ride for the past 2-3 months, so I was confused when I was preparing for the LARGE root by the bridge and much to my dismay, I never crossed over it.

I saw Gregg after the ride in the parking lot and he mentioned the same thing.  Now it seems to me chopping out that huge root goes against 2 VERY big rules of mtb trail maintenance.

1:  Don't make trails easier, especially if they are marked "extremely difficult"

2:  Don't chop roots out.  Put dirt over them if you must, but don't ever cut roots out.

So what gives?

You need to send Ken Orlando (Trail boss for Wilderness/Trout Creek/Flatwoods) an e-mail about this issue because he rarely gets on this message forum.

Personally I could care a less about Heartbreak Ridge and hope one day it gets swallowed up by the swamp. I have left plenty of flesh and blood on that trail during the Annual Squiggy Mountain bike race.

Why am I getting the feeling this surgery was performed by Swamp ??? If this is the case, some one needs to be reeled in :( The geoghrapical nature of these trails does'nt allow for many technical features other than Roots, please do not DUMB these trails down any more than they already are!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lets not assume that this was done by a SWAMP member or authorized by the trail boss (Ken Orlando). Like I said, you should send your concerns to Ken via e-mail, maybe he is not aware that this has even happened.

I doubt that would help. The damage was already done. I saw that there is a section of trail in the center of Flatwoods that was rerouted on the last workday. I can't for the life of me figure out why.

Personally, I think that there are so few trails in that system that represent any real challenge, and there are nearly 30 miles worth out there, why would we want to do that. I think that the trail is now ruined. The signs that mark it a difficult trail should probably come down. I know that there was talk of filling in some of the spots that where low and washed out, but not cutting out roots.

I am pretty disgusted by it..............

Perhaps you missed that I was poking at your silly notion about the big wheels?
