Hey Gary,
Me and my four kids are riding the series and we used  mountain bikes the past two year. I've been riding a Specialized Rockhopper Pro, it is light and a hardtail. It's alittle small for me though. I picked it up for a steal ($200.00 , with less than fifty miles on it), for my Wife allthough my oldest son has grown into it. I made it work and did okay on it. This year I bought a LeMond Poprod Cyclocross 2006 bike to ride, what a difference it made. If you want more info on it, there's a link to it on the Chainwheel Drive website as they are the primary sponsor ( and who we ride for). The final two races  take place in Largo nature park this Sunday and two Sundays from now. I don't remember their names, my bad, but it's the family that has the tandem mountain bike at the fat tire festivals (mom and daughter). Their son also rides in the juniors division. I beleive Michelle is the daughters name. There was another couple that watched the  first race, can't remember their name either, my bad again, who live in Dunedin. He's tall and thin, light red hair and his wife is small. They drive a maroon pick-up with a fifth wheel in the back and were also at the festival and holiay party.
If you don't crash occassionaly, you're not riding hard enough!!
