Fire on Spiderberm
« on: August 24, 2009, 12:57:13 PM »
We rode Boyette yesterday am until the storms blew in and raced back to the trail head dodging lightening, and met the Fire Dept at the gate as they were heading back to check a fire report on spider berm, we must have been just ahead of the strike as one was light/sound at the same time, man it was close. anyone have a report on what the damage was ?
BTW the new inbound spider berm is Awsome !

Yeah, I was there checking it out when the FD showed up on their little flatbed mini-truck.  A palm tree right near the entrance/exit area, about 10 feet off the trail took a direct hit and got cooked.  There was also some "collateral damage" to the surrounding perimeter as well, but nothing too bad.  The tree was still smoldering/smoking when they got there, but they left without seemingly doing much -- they probably felt it was too wet around the tree for anything to spread.

Lightning was bookoo serious yesterday.

Im suprised there arent more comments about the lightning as it was so bad I was thinking of lying flat on the trail and touch my tire lol. When passing sst to car I heard a strike behind me. That must have been the one. There were at least 30 unattended cars there.

Tom, there was stuff flying out the back but it was not sparks thats for sure, I have been on the water fishing with lightening that severe and graphite rods will hum quite loudly with that kind of electricity in the air, Tom just imagine how loud your Ibis would be ! It might even drown out the screaming rider.

LOL.  I'd prefer to keep the Ibis away from electricity.  ;D

What time did all of this hit? We were there from 8am until around 11am, and just as we got back to the parking lot, the rain came down in buckets, but no lightning. Man that rain felt good too. As I drove out to 672 from Balm Boyette I could see a nasty dark cloud over to the left, but heard and saw nothing.

Dan, you just missed it, we got back just before noon and the 2 miles in the rain felt good after the fire works
