When your fit - most often the difference between 1st and 2nd is who is willing to suffer more.

Well Said.  As for how hard will I push myself, I'm a fan of the "run til you puke, swim til you blackout" motto.

When I push other people they fall over too. They're not expected me to sneak up behind them like a ninja.

Another thing I noticed is that all of the clipped in guys I've ever ridden with fall over a lot while the people who ride platforms just put a foot down occasionally and keep on pedaling ;) ( they're probably not pushing themselves enough right?)
